This chart says it all. Just a thin layer of scale can dramatically reduce your boiler's efficiency. Scale acts as an insulator, requiring the boiler to work harder to heat the water into steam. Avoid scale issues by chemically treating your water, and conduct internal inspections of your boiler whenever you get the chance. Try to head off scale issues before they get as bad as these.
